Volume #27: September 2007

Harvest Season Has Started
Historically, our Chardonnay vineyard has been the first one to be harvested. This year, with the unseasonably cool and foggy weather, it has been a different story. Sugar accumulation slowed, which has allowed the vines to add more flavors to the berries while we monitor the vineyard for the optimal harvest day. Once again, we learn that we are farmers and dependent on the unpredictable whims of Mother Nature. Thatâs part of the challenge of winemaking.

Last Friday, September 20th, to kick off the ãharvest season,ä we brought in 3.3 tons of Syrah grapes from Madden Ranch in the Livermore Valley. This vineyard has a similar ãhillside effectä like our home vineyard, and we decided to harvest it with two separate passes this year. The grapes on the upper slope of the vineyard matured first, while the fruit on the lower parts are still developing flavors and sugar. By leaving this fruit to hang on the vines another week, weâll bring in hand selected grapes with desired maturity for the production of our top quality Syrah from John Maddenâs Livermore Valley vineyard.

Stay tuned in our next newsletter for updates on the progress of the 2007 harvest.

National Breast Cancer Awareness Month
October is the official National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which helps to educate all of us about the importance of regular screening, checkups and early detection.

Please join us in our quest for a cure for cancer with a purchase of our 2006 Victories RosŽ. The initial release was reserved for our Wine Club members, but we set aside a limited number of cases to be sold first come, first serve during National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Be one of the few to enjoy this worthy wine, with an even more worthy cause, and see why this dry California RosŽ was awarded 90 points in the July 2007 issue of Wine Enthusiast Magazine.

We recently enjoyed our 2006 Victories RosŽ out on the back deck with an appetizer plate of sliced figs and pears, goat cheese, and sopressata salame ö yum! Click here to order, or visit our Victories RosŽ for Research website for more information on our campaign.

Pam Greene - Project Coordinator & Wine-Nurse
My name is Pam Greene, and Iâve been with Fleming Jenkins from its earliest beginnings. Actually, I have been working with Greg since January 1989 as a Registered Nurse in his dermatology practice in the Los Gatos/Campbell area. I am a California native who transplanted herself to St. Peter, MN for nursing education at Gustavus Adolphus College, where I was awarded the BA in Nursing.

Working now with Greg and Peggy, as you can imagine, has taken me in many different directions professionally and Iâm now affectionately known as the ãwine-nurseä around the office. I keep very busy working on a wide variety of projects, along with raising two boys (ages 10 & 13) and staying active in dermatology nursing too. Being a small winery we get to wear many different hats, including participating in our winery events, which are always fun. I hope to pour our wine for you at an event soon. Ask for the Wine-Nurse!

Best Regards,
Greg & Peggy
